How to Connect Google Ads to OpenAI Dots

OpenAI Dots are always-on agents inside ChatGPT, each with its own cloud computer. This guide shows how to give your dot access to Google Ads through AdPlug, what to hand it, and how to keep your approval on anything that changes the account.

Dots launched on 29 September and are rolling out gradually. Every step below is tested, including step 5, where your dot picks up the app. If AdPlug is not listed for your dot, the same app works in a normal ChatGPT chat.

01

What Dots are, and who has them

A dot is an always-on agent in ChatGPT. OpenAI's announcement describes it as powered by GPT-6 Astra, with its own cloud computer, working across the apps you connect and keeping context between conversations.

  • ChatGPT Pro: rolling out in markets outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK.
  • Business Premium: all supported ChatGPT regions.
  • Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare: a beta the workspace admin has to enable.

On Pro and Business Premium your first dot is included in the plan. The rollout is gradual, so access can take several days to reach an account. You create a dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or on desktop web. OpenAI's help article keeps the current list.

02

How a dot reaches Google Ads

OpenAI's announcement says a dot works with its own cloud computer, its own browser, and the apps you have connected. So a dot can reach Google Ads in two ways: by opening Google Ads in its browser after you sign in, or through a connected app. A connected app hands it the Google Ads API instead of a screen, so reports come back as data and a change is a named operation with exact values.

This guide uses the second route, and it has three links: Google Ads connects to AdPlug, AdPlug is added to ChatGPT as an app, and your dot uses that app. AdPlug is added through Developer mode, the same setup used for a normal ChatGPT chat. OpenAI's help article says the dot's Plugins screen uses shared ChatGPT settings, and the announcement says you manage what a dot can access through your existing ChatGPT app controls. The Google Ads MCP overview lists what the connection can read and change.

Setup in 6 steps

Steps 1 and 2 happen in AdPlug, steps 3 and 4 in ChatGPT settings, and steps 5 and 6 with your dot. Allow about ten minutes.

  1. Create your AdPlug account

Go to adplug.app/signup, sign in with Google or email, and follow the short onboarding. It ends on your AdPlug dashboard.

AdPlug Create your account screen with a Continue with Google button and name, email and password fields.
AdPlug sign-up. One click with Google, or an email and password.
  2. Connect Google Ads to AdPlug

On the dashboard, click Connect Google Ads (or open the Connections page). AdPlug takes you through Google's own sign-in; use the Google identity that can see the accounts you want your dot to work on.

AdPlug dashboard welcome screen with an arrow pointing to the Connect Google Ads button.
Click Connect Google Ads to start Google's sign-in.

If you manage clients through a manager account (MCC), connect the manager identity. One connection then covers every account under it.

Google Ads connected. The card shows the authorising email and the date.
  3. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT

In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings. Developer mode sits in one of two places, depending on which layout your account has: Apps → Advanced settings (shown below), or Security and login on the newer layout, where Apps has become Plugins. Switch it on. The Elevated risk label belongs to Developer mode itself: it lets you add connectors OpenAI has not verified. The toggle's own note also says Memory is disabled while it is on.

    If your menus look different

OpenAI is moving Apps to Plugins and the labels are changing with it. Its Developer mode guide has the current ones.

  4. Add AdPlug to ChatGPT

Go back to Settings → Apps and click Create app. On the newer layout, open Plugins and use the plus button. Either way, fill in:

    • Name: AdPlug - Google Ads
    • MCP Server URL: the address below
    • Authentication: leave as OAuth
    • Tick I understand and want to continue, then click Create

On Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces the form also has a Scan Tools button. Click it, approve the AdPlug sign-in when it opens, and let the scan finish before you click Create.

ChatGPT then opens AdPlug's sign-in. Use the same email as your AdPlug account and click Approve.

AdPlug's authorise screen. Approve to let ChatGPT use your AdPlug connection.

The app now appears under Enabled apps with a Dev label. If you would rather copy than type, your AdPlug dashboard shows the same name and address with copy buttons.

  5. Check your dot can use AdPlug

Open your dot's profile and go to Customize → Plugins. OpenAI's help article describes this screen for the mobile app and says it uses your shared ChatGPT settings. Look for AdPlug - Google Ads, review its permissions, and connect it.

Customize → Plugins in your dot's profile, with AdPlug - Google Ads connected.

OpenAI also says the apps available to a dot may differ. If AdPlug is not listed for yours, the app you created in step 4 still works in a normal ChatGPT chat.

  6. Test the connection

    Message your dot:

    “List my Google Ads accounts.”

It should call the google_ads_list_accounts tool and return your accounts with their names, currencies, and manager hierarchy.

An OpenAI dot answering 'List my Google Ads accounts' through the AdPlug Google Ads MCP, with each account's name, ID, type, currency and status.
Your dot's reply to the test prompt, one row for each account it can reach.

04

What to hand to your dot

A dot earns its keep on the checks you would otherwise repeat by hand. You ask for a recurring check, it runs on schedule, and the result lands in the conversation. You manage them under Scheduled in the dot's profile.

List your Google Ads accounts

“List my Google Ads accounts.”

Morning pacing check

“Every weekday at 8:00, check month-to-date spend against budget for every enabled campaign and tell me only if something is more than 15% off pace.”

Monday report

“Every Monday morning, summarise last week's spend, conversions, and CPA by campaign against the week before, in five lines I can forward to the client.”

Search term watch

“Once a week, list search terms with more than $50 spent and no conversions in the last 30 days, and draft negative keywords for my review. Do not apply them.”

Conversion tracking check

“Each morning, tell me if any conversion action that normally records conversions recorded none yesterday.”

One-off audit

“Pull the last 30 days for every enabled campaign and tell me the three things you would look at first, with the numbers behind each.”

More copy-paste prompts live in the prompt playbooks.

Rules for changes

When you are not working with it, a dot does what OpenAI calls proactive research. In that mode it uses connected apps with tools restricted to read-only, so it cannot change anything in the account.

For actions, a dot follows Custom rules. Each rule sets one of four behaviours: Take action without asking, Take action if pre-approved, Ask before taking action, or Hand off to you. For anything that edits a campaign, choose Ask before taking action.

One limit to know about: OpenAI's MCP apps article says write actions through custom MCP apps are for Business, Enterprise, and Edu, so on Pro your dot may be able to read and not change.

AdPlug adds its own step. It gives the dot two tools for campaign changes: a preview tool that returns the exact change without applying it, and an execute tool that applies it, and only when that change was previewed first. The free plan is view only; creating and editing campaigns needs a paid AdPlug plan.

OpenAI's own caution applies here too: a dot can make mistakes, including when following your rules, so check the details before you rely on a result. Report calls and executed changes are recorded in your AdPlug Usage and Audit Log.

The audit trail lists each tool call with its status and time.

Troubleshooting

Click any item to expand the answer.

I do not see Dots in ChatGPT
Dots need ChatGPT Pro (outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK) or Business Premium, or an Enterprise workspace where an admin has enabled the beta. The rollout is gradual, so access can take several days. You create a dot in the desktop app or on desktop web, not on mobile. OpenAI's help article has the current list.
AdPlug is not in my dot's Plugins list
First check the app is enabled in ChatGPT under Settings → Apps (Plugins on the newer layout). If it is, and your dot still does not list it, use AdPlug in a normal ChatGPT chat for now: start a chat, open the + menu in the composer, and pick the AdPlug app. Tell us at support@adplug.app so we can update this guide.
I cannot find Developer mode
It is a web-only setting, under Settings → Apps → Advanced settings (or Settings → Security and login on the newer layout). OpenAI's Developer mode guide lists it for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. On Business workspaces only admins and owners can switch it on.
A report returns USER_PERMISSION_DENIED
The Google identity you connected cannot see that account. Open Google Ads, confirm it has at least read access, then ask again. If you only have manager access, let your dot list the accessible accounts first rather than naming an account ID.
A change says no preview is waiting, or that the preview expired
AdPlug's Google Ads execute tools apply one previewed change at a time. A newer preview replaces an older one, and most previews also expire after 15 minutes. Ask your dot to preview the change again, read what it is about to do, then tell it to execute before it previews anything else.

Questions people ask

What is an OpenAI dot?
A dot is an always-on agent inside ChatGPT, announced by OpenAI on 29 September 2026. It runs on its own cloud computer, works across the apps you connect, keeps context between conversations, and can run scheduled tasks.
Which ChatGPT plans include Dots?
OpenAI's help article lists Dots as rolling out to Pro users in markets outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK, and to Business Premium users in all supported regions. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces can try the beta once an admin enables it. Access is gradual and can take several days to reach an account.
Can a dot connect to Google Ads?
A dot works with the apps connected to your ChatGPT account. AdPlug's Google Ads MCP server is added to ChatGPT as an app through Developer mode. OpenAI's help article says a dot's Plugins screen, which it documents for the mobile app, uses shared ChatGPT settings, and that the apps available to a dot may differ. As of 1 October 2026 this setup is tested in ChatGPT chats and on a live dot.
How do I connect Google Ads to ChatGPT without a dot?
Follow steps 1 to 4 of this guide. They add AdPlug's Google Ads MCP server to ChatGPT through Developer mode, which OpenAI lists for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts on the web. Then start a chat, open the + menu in the composer, pick the AdPlug app, and ask for your accounts.
Can a dot change my Google Ads campaigns?
That depends on your ChatGPT plan. OpenAI's help centre says write actions through custom MCP apps are for Business, Enterprise, and Edu, so a dot on Pro may be limited to reading. Where changes are available, set a Custom rule to Ask before taking action for campaign edits. AdPlug gives the dot a preview tool and an execute tool for campaign changes, the Google Ads execute tools only apply a change that was previewed first, and changes need a paid AdPlug plan. When a dot researches in the background on its own, OpenAI restricts connected apps to read-only tools.
Can a dot run Google Ads reports on a schedule?
Yes. Ask your dot to run a recurring check, such as a Monday summary of last week's spend and conversions. Scheduled runs appear in the conversation and are managed under Scheduled in the dot's profile.
What is the MCP server URL for Google Ads?
https://api.adplug.app/mcp/google-ads, authenticated with OAuth after you connect Google Ads at adplug.app.
Is there a free way to try this?
AdPlug's free plan is view only, with 500 requests in the first month and 50 a month after that, so daily checks need a paid AdPlug plan. Dots themselves require ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium, or an Enterprise workspace where an admin has enabled the beta.
