How to Connect Google Search Console to ChatGPT

Connecting ChatGPT to Google Search Console gives it your clicks, queries, pages and index status straight from Google. On plans that allow it, it can also submit sitemaps and manage properties once you approve. This guide covers which ChatGPT plans can do what, the five setup steps with screenshots, and the first prompts worth running.

01

Two ways to connect, and who each is for

One thing to keep apart first: this guide is about reading your own Google Search Console data in ChatGPT. It has nothing to do with how your site shows up in ChatGPT's answers.

An open-source Search Console MCP server

There are dozens on GitHub. Most run on your own computer, and you set up your own Google Cloud project and credentials before they can sign in to Google. Free, and fine if someone on the team is happy in a terminal.

A hosted MCP connector (this guide)

AdPlug's Search Console MCP covers every Search Analytics report, 14 ready-made analyses, URL Inspection next to a live check of the page, sitemap audits, and your organic queries next to your Google Ads search terms. You sign in with Google and paste one address into ChatGPT. The same connection also works in Claude, Cursor, and Claude Code.

02

Which ChatGPT plans can do this

Custom MCP servers are added through ChatGPT's Developer mode. OpenAI's Developer mode guide lists it as available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts, on the web only, and describes it as full MCP support for read and write tools, with write actions asking for your confirmation by default.

OpenAI's help centre is more cautious. Its MCP apps article says write actions are for Business, Enterprise, and Edu, and that Pro accounts connect custom servers with read and fetch tools. The two pages do not agree, so on Plus and Pro treat reporting as the safe expectation and test one small change before you rely on more.

No Developer mode on your plan?

The same AdPlug connection works in Claude, and Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector, per Anthropic's custom connector guide. The Google Search Console to Claude guide covers that setup in five steps.

Setup in 5 steps

From a new AdPlug account to ChatGPT answering questions about your search traffic takes about five minutes. There's no Google Cloud project, OAuth client, or API key to set up.

Already use AdPlug for your ads in ChatGPT? Keep that app and create this one next to it. The all-platforms address carries the ad platforms only, so Search Console always gets its own app.

  1. Create your AdPlug account

Go to adplug.app/signup, sign in with Google or email, and follow the short onboarding. It ends on your AdPlug dashboard.

AdPlug Create your account screen with a Continue with Google button and name, email and password fields.
AdPlug sign-up. One click with Google, or an email and password.
  2. Connect Google Search Console to AdPlug

In onboarding, or any time on the Connections page, click Connect Google Search Console and sign in with the Google account that opens your sites in Search Console. Every property that account can see becomes available to ChatGPT through the one connection.

AdPlug Ad Platform Connections page with an arrow pointing to the Connect Google Search Console button on the Google Search Console card.
Click Connect Google Search Console to start Google's sign-in.

Google then asks you to let AdPlug “View and manage Search Console data for your verified sites”. Leave that box ticked. Without it AdPlug refuses the connection and asks you to connect again.

    Google Ads already connected?

Search Console has its own Google sign-in, even when it's the same Google account, so you can disconnect one without touching the other.

  3. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT

In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings. Developer mode sits in one of two places, depending on which layout your account has: Apps → Advanced settings (shown below), or Security and login on the newer layout, where Apps has become Plugins. Switch it on. The Elevated risk label belongs to Developer mode itself: it lets you add connectors OpenAI has not verified. The toggle's own note also says Memory is disabled while it is on.

    Developer mode switched on.

    If your menus look different

OpenAI is moving Apps to Plugins and the labels are changing with it. Its Developer mode guide has the current ones.

  4. Add AdPlug to ChatGPT

Go back to Settings → Apps and click Create app. On the newer layout, open Plugins and use the plus button. Either way, fill in:

    • Name: AdPlug - Google Search Console
    • MCP Server URL: the address below
    • Authentication: leave as OAuth
    • Tick I understand and want to continue, then click Create

On Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces the form also has a Scan Tools button. Click it, approve the AdPlug sign-in when it opens, and let the scan finish before you click Create.

ChatGPT then opens AdPlug's sign-in. Use the same email as your AdPlug account and click Approve.

AdPlug Authorize access screen asking whether an application may access your AdPlug account, with Deny and Approve buttons.
AdPlug's authorise screen. Approve to let ChatGPT use your AdPlug connection.

The app now appears under Enabled apps with a Dev label. If you would rather copy than type, your AdPlug dashboard shows the same name and address with copy buttons.

  5. Test the connection

Start a new chat, open the + menu in the composer, and select the AdPlug app (on some accounts it sits under Developer mode in that menu). Then ask:

    “List my Search Console properties.”

ChatGPT calls the google_search_console_list_sites tool and returns every property your Google account can see, with its type (Domain or URL prefix) and your permission level. If your properties are listed, the connection works end to end.

ChatGPT answering 'List my Search Console properties' with the AdPlug - Google Search Console app selected, showing each property's address, type and permission level.
ChatGPT's reply to the test prompt, with the AdPlug app selected in the composer.

04

What you can ask ChatGPT

These work as soon as Search Console is connected. Swap [site] for your domain and ChatGPT finds the property that covers it. The paid vs organic prompt also needs Google Ads connected to the same AdPlug account, which takes Pro or Max. More copy-paste prompts live in the prompt playbooks.

List your properties

“List my Search Console properties.”

Weekly SEO snapshot

“Give me a weekly snapshot for [site]: clicks, impressions, CTR and position against the week before, the five pages and queries that moved most, and anything unusual.”

Titles worth rewriting

“Which page-one queries on [site] get a much lower CTR than my usual CTR at that position? Group them by page and suggest a better title and description for the top five pages.”

Two pages, one query

“Find queries where two or more of my pages on [site] split the impressions. Which page should own each query, and what should I do with the other one?”

Why isn't this page indexed?

“Inspect https://[your-site].com/[page]. Is it indexed? Compare what Google saw with the live page and tell me what to fix first.”

Paid vs organic

“Compare the search terms in Google Ads account [ID] with the organic queries on [site] for the last 90 days. Where am I paying for clicks I already win organically?”

05

How changes work

Google's Search Console API allows four changes, and AdPlug covers all of them: submit or resubmit a sitemap, remove a sitemap, add a property, and remove a property. AdPlug's preview tool returns the exact change without making it (for a sitemap, it loads the file live and shows its current status in Search Console). The execute tool applies it with the same values, and ChatGPT treats that as a write action and asks you to confirm first. Each applied change counts as one AI edit.

ChatGPT also has a permission setting for connected apps, with options such as Always ask, Allow read actions, and Allow low-risk actions. Keep it on Always ask or Allow read actions, so every change waits for you.

The free plan is view only; applying changes needs a paid AdPlug plan. On a team, the owner can set a teammate to View only for Search Console. Report calls and executed changes are recorded in your AdPlug Usage and Audit Log.

No Request indexing button

Google has no API for Request indexing on normal pages. Its Indexing API is limited to job postings and livestream pages, and AdPlug doesn't use it. Submitting a sitemap is the supported route, and URL Inspection tells you why a page isn't indexed.

Troubleshooting

Click any item to expand the answer.

I cannot find Developer mode
It is a web-only setting, under Settings → Apps → Advanced settings (or Settings → Security and login on the newer layout). OpenAI lists it for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. On Business workspaces only admins and owners can switch it on; on Enterprise and Edu an admin grants access first. OpenAI's Developer mode guide has the current list.
AdPlug says Search Console access was unticked
Google's consent screen lets you untick each permission. Connect again and leave “View and manage Search Console data for your verified sites” ticked.
The connection shows no Search Console properties
The Google account you connected has to be a user on at least one property. Open search.google.com/search-console with that account and check the site is there, then reconnect on the Connections page with the Google account that has it.
ChatGPT does not use AdPlug in a chat
Apps are selected per message. Open the + menu in the composer and pick the AdPlug app again, or name it in the prompt: “Use AdPlug to list my Search Console properties.”
ChatGPT reads my data but will not run a change
Check two things. AdPlug's free plan can read but not edit. And OpenAI's help centre says write actions through custom MCP apps are for Business, Enterprise, and Edu, so a Plus or Pro account may be limited to reading. The same AdPlug account makes changes from Claude.
The numbers don't match the Search Console website
Search Console reports in Pacific Time and its last two days or so are still filling in, so AdPlug's date ranges end on the latest finished day unless you ask for fresh data. Totals also include anonymized queries that never show up as rows, which is why the rows rarely add up to the total. AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the web totals, and Google keeps 16 months of data.

Questions people ask

Can I connect ChatGPT to Google Search Console?
Yes. AdPlug runs a hosted Search Console MCP server: you sign in with Google, paste one address into ChatGPT's Developer mode, and ChatGPT can read your search performance, inspect URLs, and check your sitemaps. There's no Google Cloud project, OAuth client, or API key to set up.
Does this show how my site appears in ChatGPT?
No. This guide connects ChatGPT to your Google Search Console data, so you can analyse how your site does in Google Search. Search Console has no data on ChatGPT's own answers. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside its web totals.
Which ChatGPT plans can add a custom MCP server?
OpenAI's developer documentation lists Developer mode as available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts on the web. It is not available in the mobile apps. On Business workspaces only admins and owners can turn it on, and on Enterprise and Edu an admin grants access first. OpenAI's two pages differ on write tools: the developer guide says Developer mode supports read and write, while the help centre article says write actions are for Business, Enterprise, and Edu.
Is Search Console a separate connection from Google Ads?
Yes. Search Console has its own Google sign-in, even when it's the same Google account as your Google Ads, and its own app in ChatGPT, because AdPlug's all-platforms address carries the ad platforms only. You can disconnect one without touching the other.
Can ChatGPT request indexing for a page?
No. Google has no API for the Request indexing button on normal pages. Its Indexing API only covers job postings and livestream pages, and AdPlug doesn't use it. ChatGPT can submit or resubmit a sitemap instead, and inspect a URL to tell you why it isn't indexed.
Can ChatGPT make changes in Search Console?
Yes, where your ChatGPT plan runs write tools, and only the four changes Google's API allows: submit or resubmit a sitemap, remove a sitemap, add a property, and remove a property. AdPlug's preview tool shows the change without making it, ChatGPT asks for your confirmation before it runs the execute tool, and each applied change counts as one AI edit. AdPlug's free plan previews changes but doesn't apply them.
Is connecting ChatGPT to Search Console free?
AdPlug's free plan covers one platform, and Search Console can be that platform: view only, with 500 requests in the first month and 50 a month after that. Pro and Max include every platform. On the ChatGPT side you need a plan that includes Developer mode.
Does the same connector work in Claude, Cursor, or Claude Code?
Yes. https://api.adplug.app/mcp/google-search-console is a standard MCP server, so the same connection works in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
